GOTTESLOB

PERFORMANCE / MIXED MEDIA INSTALLATION ,

Gotteslob is a naiive and attempt to enter a personal subject for reflection, not by analysis (at first), but by
physical experience. Appropriately, I got the title of this exhibition from the Roman Catholic songbook,
which I tried to sing through in one go by myself in a church. I recorded myself singing until I passed out
after about six and half hours. The recording and performance becomes the foundation for this installation.
In it, my singing and the process my body’s deterioration is experienced by the audience.

Gotteslob is a search for hope and knowledge about failure. This performance sent me on the search to find
the child-like feeling in the church songs a “Love of God” as I had got to know and perceived when I was
younger. The value of singing is higher than that of the spoken word. In the performance, I use this initial
situation in order to celebrate a ritual next to, but not far from the usual perception. This break from
convention and the church tradition is a personal connection and entry to those very feelings experienced
during my childhood.

The installation is comprised of a projector and the number of the hymn from the song book that is presently
being heard. The sound comes from the recording of the performance. The work is seen as a loop and lasts 6 hours.
